1980 Scout II- starts up great when cold. After I drive it , it won't turn over. You turn the ignition and the brake light comes on and the battery indicator level jumps. If I let it sit for 2-3 hours, it starts right up again. I have tightened and tested the connections, tested the starter and replaced the battery.

Is this an electrical issue or a vapor block? I thought with a vapor lock the car still tries to turn over. Any ideas?

Definitely not vapor lock. This is often referred to as a hot start issue and is most problematic with starter mounted solenoid/relay combos such as the delco which is used in a great many GM vehicles as well as ihc light line vehicles. Is your starter heat shield in place? If not, you need to get one there. Exhaust manifold heat is very hard on electric motors and believe it or not, that little piece of curved tin actually does help quite a bit.

The other thing to look into is a starter relay that can be mounted away from the exhaust heat and perform the current switching ahead of the starter-mounted unit. One method of accomplishing this is via a Ford-style remote starter relay, while another method employs a cube-shaped electrical relay. Both methods are discussed in great detail across the interwebs. I believe there is even a how-to thread with pictures of the Ford option contained within the electrical sub-section of this tech forum.

Thanks! It does have a heat shield but it is rusted. I bought a new one on this site. I will try the Ford style remote starter relay. I appreciate the help!

Almost have the Ford relay done..... Looking for the coil wire that goes off the I terminal on the starter solenoid back to the positive on the coil. I found the coil. I can't find the wire that goes back to the solenoid.

Anyone have a step by step instruction? Thanks!!!

That wire is a bypass during starter cranking for breaker points distributors. You should have electronic ignition, which means you don't need this bypass wire.
