Hello everyone, I have a couple dumb questions here. First is where is the neutral start switch on the 727 trans? Next where is the front axle switch located in the transfer case or front axle some where. I have looked through both parts and service manuals. I must be missing them. Thanks for any and all help. This is my first IH truck so I'm still learning. I'm reading alot on these forums here and trying to put to good use. Going to put the relay for hot start problem on today.

The neutral safety switch is located where the shift linkage connects to the transmission, on the driver side of the transmission. Front axle engaged switch would be on a bracket fastened to front of the transfer case on the front output shaft bearing retainer.....some trucks have it others don't.

If you spend some time looking through the stickied threads in the trans tech section, you will see some pics of the 727 trans in various stages of disassemble. You will also see where the three pronged neutral start switch is threaded into the case, roughly where steve described. The transmission section in the factory service manual is also pretty descriptive in wording and illustrations. Which manual are you referencing? Are you experiencing intermittent starting issues?

Transfer case switch is mounted on the top of the t-case at the outboard shift rail (the one for the front axle engagement)
pics attached.
The switch has one wire going to it and a second wire for ground attached nearby.
This is an option, so all trucks do not have this switch.

Ok, thank you for the info. I have found the front axle engage switch and installed the hot start relay and wiring. Still haven't had time to look for the neutral switch will do later today. Where can a guy pick up a new axle switch ? Mine looks to have come apart pulled it out and got a spring no ball. I assume the ball is still in box need to get a magnet and go fishing. To scoutboy74, yes I was having trouble with starting I read yours and other posts about hot start. Thanks for the info and I'm always wanting to learn more.

Anytime it does not have to be hot. Figured it was bad neutral safety switch. It will start in any gear. Service manual mt2306 I think got it from binder books 1748 pages.

Could be a combination of issues. The ability to engage the starter in any gear position could mean that the ns switch was failing intermittently. The standard po barnyard/backalley fix-around for that is to bypass the nss by jumping the center wire to chassis ground, rather than going to the trouble of actually replacing the faulty part. It is kind of a pita repair to perform with the trans in the rig, mainly due to the huge atf mess that occurs. The switch is also a fluid plug. Do your reverse lights work? That circuit also passes through the nss via the two outside poles. One is b+ supply and the other is + out to the rear harness when 'r' is selected. The random no start engagement is more likely to be an electrical issue, which May or May not be cured by the remote relay modification. The bulkhead connector is another potential culprit, as is the ignition switch itself.
