727 Swap?

1972 Scout 2, 345 engine and 727 trans.

I've come to understand that the Chrysler 727 transmission was specifically designed for ih. In other words, one cannot just grab any old 727 and strap it up to a 345 etc...

What if a guy installed a Chrysler motor, say a 340, with a 727 attached? Would that work with the transfer case?

If the Transmission has the Texas Style mounting pattern like a dana 20 I don't see why not. If it's round you would need the round pattern tcases like a Jeep dana 300

If the trans has the correct tailhousing like Josh mentioned.

They can be swapped.

Folks have swapped Mopar engines into the Scout II and backed them with an engine matching Mopar pattern 727. A member who used to be active on this forum years ago had (maybe still has) a pretty sweet SII with a Mopar 383 and matching 727. He named it "Mobinder". The Scout II with IH pattern 727 incorporates a short adapter housing to mate with the reverse Texas pattern Dana 20 two speed t-case or the single speed chain drive case. It would naturally involve a fair amount of research, fabrication work and proper parts sourcing and combining to achieve, but it has certainly been done by a handful of folks scattered across hither and yon.
