71 800B build

Just got this 71 800B a couple of weeks ago for a project. Not looking to restore to any kind of perfect shape but just a slow project to work on over time.

It has a IH 304, t727 auto, Dana 300. It runs and drives except reverse is not working and neutral drives forwards.

I would like to swap out the tranny for a manual (t98 or t19?) but not sure what I will need for that yet. I'll be searching over the threads for info but any direct info is always a help. I'm in daytona if anyone else is around florida.

I'm new to these forums and relatively new to IH projects. I'm looking forward to tearing this one down and building it back up!

Here are some before pics

Welcome to the forum. Your trans and t-case combo are not original to your 800 and so were swapped in from a 1980 Scout II at some point. The shifting malfunction could be as simple as the shifter cable being out of adjustment, preventing full travel of the shift linkage. The 727 is a pretty robust automatic when everything is as it should be.

Thanks for the reply and info. I do have an IH manual so that will be a big help. I want to switch over to manual just because I prefer them but I've heard other good things about the 727. If I can fix it easily, I might keep it for a while.

Question then... If my tyranny and t/c are from a Scout II, would a Scout II manual tyranny be a relatively easy swap? I have an opportunity to get a t98 with a Dana 20 and the pedal assembly but I'm still trying to figure out if it would work with my setup.

The transmission itself would likely be the same either way. You want the 800 pedal assembly and clutch slave cylinder though, as the sii utilizes a mechanical clutch. The firewall of your Scout will flex too much to work with the sii mechanical linkage.

Alright thanks, good advice. If the t98 works out, I might get it. But, for now I'll just be trying to work on the t727.

I need to get a manual for the t727, anyone know a good link for repair/rebuild/adjustment of that tranny in the meantime?

Any authorized reprint of a sii factory service manual from '73 forward will contain detailed info regarding that unit. Those are available right here via the online store. The best resource that I know of is the torqueflite a727 handbook written by carl munroe and available via amazon. I've messed around enough on these units over the past 6 months to know my way around them fairly well also.

Alright, thanks; much appreciated. I'll update (a.k.a. Ask more questions) when I get a chance to look at the t727 :icon_lol:

Welcome
the 727 aint so bad. It's been in the last two scouts I own. The d-300 t/c is a desirable transfer case. Especially if it's an oem IH version. The heep version d-300 doesn't have the texas style mounting bolt pattern that IH carries through out most models.
