Hi I am a fng I teach an auto class in high school. Looking for a project car for the kids. Got a line on a 1970 IH Scout he said it is a v8. How can I tell if it is a 266 or a 304? How hard is it to get parts? Is there any thing else I should know?
Thanks Jesse

Welcome. Originally 1970 model year with v8 would be a 304, but swaps happen. The engine id boss can be found on the passenger side of the block towards the front between the head and the fuel pump and is the best definitive id.

Welcome
most all the parts can be sourced through IH Parts America. online store The very same kind folks who provide this forum for us IH addicts. If the part you need is not listed, then give them a call, since some parts May not be listed. You could also post up in the wanted goods section and another member May have what you're looking for.

Also, since these IH motors are a completely different breed of gas hogs, compared to other manufacturers, it would be benificial to read through some of the sticky threads in the gas engine section, and other sub sections through out this forum. Lots of good tech info that I learned a lot from myself.

Thanks for the info so far guys. Ok went to look at the Scout today. Body is rough, rockers are bad some other small holes here and there. Back hatch is beat up, drivers window wont roll up, floor pans look ok but the body will need a lot of work. Has a new gas tank hooked up in the back cargo area. Clutch feels ok. Under the hood looks good I can turn it over by hand going to go back on Monday and try to start it. I am planning on doing the restoration myself and have done almost no body work before. I do have a few people I May be to ask if I have questions. He wants $500 for it. Go for it or take a pass?

1970 Scout 800 v8
thanks Jesse

Parts alone are worth that price. Without going through the pre-oiling procedure, damage can occur even rotating by hand. If it's been sitting for awhile then it is definately worth pre-oiling the system. Kinda why I mentioned about reading over some of the tech info in the sub forums. Probably have a Dana 44 rear end with drum brakes and a Dana 30 with drum brakes up front. And a Dana 20 transfer case. That is if it's a 4x4.

The regulator for the window is probably the culprit as to why it won't roll up or down. Rocker panels could be sourced through IHPA as mentioned before. If parts are not listed in the online store, give them a call. As they have many used parts that wouldn't be listed.

Thanks for the help. You can bet you will be hearing from me soon so many q’s got the link from “old iron” so that’s a start.
