Off to wally world! Made a deal on this rig a couple weeks ago in norcal (long distance from oahu). I was raised IH on the farm, currently into early broncos (built '69 & '68 crawler project) and couldn't stay away from this 'ol girl. We're a family of 6 so finding an old school 4x4 to carry us all and our camping gear with the possibility of a tow rig for the crawler was key. My wife fell in love with a coworkers '64 1200 out here and we almost bought it but it was just too far gone with rot. Found this one that appears in pretty good shape (much better than the '64 mentioned) at a fraction of the cost.

Stats:
1967 Travelall 1100b 4x4
sv 304 w/ "increased cooling"
t-98a manual 4spd
np-202 xfer case
Dana-44 clsd knuckle front w/ 4.09s
Dana-44 rear w/ 4.09s and powerlock
power steering/ brakes
61 amp alternator
super capacity heater/ defroster
bone stock!

We're flying out to visit the grandparents for halloween (pumpkin patch on the ranch in chico) and I'll pick'er up then and hopefully get her running again and up to the hills for some family fun! She'll stay at the ranch in chico until we move home in 5 yrs or so when she'll become my dd as my non-smogable 2004 powerstroke won't be coming home w/ us. She's sat for 3 years when she was parked in good running order by the po due to a new baby in his family. Hoping a fuel system cleaning, standard fluid changes/ flushes and a tuneup will have her back to life.

Currently looking at a '71 1110 4x4 pickup for some donor parts to include the 392 that's in it.

More to come as she comes back to life...

Great find! And that one is definitely a kalifornee emissions version, it's gotta a.I.r. Pump still in place!

I was wondering what that thing was! I was hoping for dealer installed a/c since I didn't think there were any emissions crap in '67. Oh well, I've got a real nice york I can put something together with and dump that air pump.:ihih:

Anyone traveling from san diego area to norcal or above in the next 6 weeks? I found the glass for the driver's rear 1/4 & a stock fuel gauge in san diego. I'd be more than happy to reimburse with some gas money for your troubles!

Also gonna try some slightly used (in great shape) 33x9.50x15 ats I found in norcal on the stock wheels. I figure they'll get me through the next several years until I get to the chebby 3/4 ton axle swap.

Thanks,
fungus

A/C retrofit?

Anyone have any info on a/c systems that'll work in these rigs? I've got a real nice york compressor I can use. Are the options limited to aftermarket stuff like vintage air or has anyone had success with a donor or junkyard retrofit? This'll eventually be my dd in norcal with summer time temps hitting upwards of 105+ so a/c would definately be nice to have...

Thanks,
john

The "factory" a/c on the roundbody stuff was actually an aftermarket-type under dash unit with a york compressor mounted exactly like the later rigs. I've had a few of those.

Integrated hvac was introduced with the full model change to the "square body" series for m/y 1969.

A few of the vintage air integrated units would certainly be adaptable to a roundbody. But I certainly would not consider using a cci/york compressor if I was going that route, though using one of our ihon adapter mounts on an oem ihc compressor mount would be perfect.

Have you researched several threads in the engine cooling and mobile hvac sub-forum??:

And:

And:

For starters.

Can anyone help me w/ some LST info? Looking primarily to figure out exactly what steering system this has. Can't match the #s up w/ anything on the sss website. Also, as a bonus, any idea why this rig would have come w/ the "export" version of the 304? Atleast that's how I'm interpreting the 12100 on my LST.

Thanks!
John

I can't answer the steering question with 100% certainty.
Code 05209 (s-24d) is figure 05-24 in the mt-118 parts catalog.

The v-304 question: from my original mt-118 IH parts catalog,(not a reprint or copy), the code for the v-304 gasoline engine is 12100 or 12102, for the lpg version it is 12101, and for low compression export it is 12721.

Thanks for the info! Sss line ticket info lists the 12100 as the export version hence my confusion. Your numbers make more sense to me.

Thanks again,
john

She's alive & well, well sortof... Got it to chico a week ago & w/ sparing time had the large pass side tank cleaned & lined, new electric fuel pump & filters (pre pump & pre carb), all new fuel line & filler tube, rebuilt carb, bled brakes & topped off the p/s res. After the carb rebuild (motorcraft 2 barrel) she ran like a top! Decided to pressurewash the engine (she was smokin' like mad when warm due to years of buildup) & now nuthin'. Won't even fire. I cleaned & dried points & cap & still nothing. I'll try her again tomorrow but electronic ignition will be on the next visits list. Good news is, after a thorough cleaning, the motor felt like it could pull a house down! Tranny goes through all gears with ease & no grinding. Got the "new" 33x 9.50x 15 ats mounted & they look like they were made for each other. She'll be a runner & couldn't be happier w/ the purchase especially since I talked it down another $200 due to some cowl rust the po didn't know was there. Pics soon as soon as I can get to a net friendly zone.

Switched from the wimpy napa pump to a Holley red & she's runnin' like a song! Changed the oil & she's ready to hibernate until next visit.

Some updated pics w/ the "new" tires and a wash. Yes, that's our restored farmall 100 in the pics too.

Now you need to get some nos hub caps, either the little dog dish style or the full size ones off of the Scout II's.

Either way they would dress up that old 'binder.

Bling always makes things look nicer.

Yeah, would've been nice to have a set come with it but there might be an 8 lug 3/4 ton axle swap in the future. I was going to clean them up and repaint the wheels but just ran outta time this trip. The more I think about it though she might take care of my towing duties just fine in stock form. Total tow weight should only be around 7k lbs with a '68 Bronco on a 2 axle car trailer. I'll just make sure I've got a good trailer brake setup. I was amazed at how much torque she's got with the current setup! Add TBI and electronic ignition and I'll be she'll suit my needs just fine.

Next trip I'll plan to do the electronic ignition, cleanup the driver's side fuel tank and re-install and cleanup some of the wiring. New rubber around all the doors would be nice too. Fun project and she got alot of comments from people coming out to my folk's pumpkin patch at the ranch & the family that came up to visit.

Your t-all should be more than up to hauling 7k lbs.

My '65 3/4-ton 4x4 with sv304 and 4-speed tows my 26' avion like it isn't even behind the t-all. I know my fuel use doesn't change very much at all when the trailer is on behind.

The real limiting factor is the brakes. I am seriously thinking of adding a hydra-vac to increase my stopping power. Ideally I would like to swap in some 8-lug wheels/axles with four wheel discs. But time and $$$ won't allow that at this time.

I am thinking your 1/2-ton brakes will have the same issues.

On the other hand, the ihc regular 1/2-tons were rated more like the big 3's light 3/4-tons so I would say your 1/2-ton should be able to do as much as a fordodgelet 3/4-ton.

The brakes work great on it right now but obviously no load on them. I found an old reciept (from 12 yrs ago) where the po had all new brakes put on the truck. Less than 5k since then on the "new" brakes. It would be awfully nice to have discs up front at a minimum but I've got lots of work I can do in this rig before I go worrying about an axle swap. I used to drive a '52 Chevy 2 ton bobtail for crying out loud loaded to the gills and got that thing stopped ok w/ manual drums all around when I had to. I just need to take a step down memory lane, bring back those old skills and give myself a little more room behind the idiot in the yugo infront of me...

All that being said, some dogdish caps would be awesome to have if you or anyone else reading might know where a guy could find some. Been looking since you mentioned it and I like the idea! Might need to just post a thread in the "wanted" classifieds.

Thanks,
john

Ok gents, getting close to pulling the trigger on a donor d body t'all for the 3/4 ton 4x4 running gear! As a bonus it's got what appears to be a t-34 od 5spd manual transmission. The shift knob is labeled "od" in the top right corner of the shift pattern towards the dash (confirmed by owner over the phone). I was seriously hoping that it had a t-35 or 36 in it being a 3/4 ton but not looking that lucky. I just ordered the LST from whs minutes ago and will be confirming the trans when it comes back in a couple days.

Question: I'd really like a direct 5 spd for my '67 tow/ family expedition rig project. If I end up with this donor in the near future would anyone be interested in trading a t-35/ or 36 for this t-34 od? I know I'm jumping the gun abit but it'll play a small part in whether or not I pick this rig up (as well as the rest of the running gear described in the LST). I've been on the phone several times with the owner and she's been happy to give me info as she can get it. Truck will ultimately be located in chico, CA once I make the deal and have it delivered to my folks ranch where "grizz" is a sittin'. Let me know if anyone would be interested in the trans trade.

John

Got it! '69 1200d, 345, t-34, np-202, d-44 front 4.09s, d-60 ff rear w/ powerlock & 4.10s, 16.5" 8 lug wheels, s-282 power steering group and new brakes on all 4 corners. Already got a trade working from portland for a t-36 trans for the t-34 od.:d
