4wd engangement cable design

I have a 72, that I replaced the 258, with a 304 auto, from my 73.
It has the pull knob 4wd engagement.. I am not really a fan of this, I want to keep my auto tranny, but is there another option for my 4wd engagement? I did like how my 3 speed had the stick shift transfer case with low/high 4wd. I am fine with the all on/off, but would prefer a different engagement. Any ideas??

The only option is to swap in a 2 speed Dana 20 or Dana 300 transfer case with a lever.

Your single speed unit is an oddball orphan with no real aftermarket or options avaliable.
 
Scout II Dana 20 transfer cases (reverse texas bolt pattern) are fairly plentiful and generally inexpensive. The sii d-300's are much tougher to come by and fetch a fair pile of pennies as a result. As I am unfamiliar with the chain drive unit you have now, I do not know if it is actuated by the same type of auto bull gears that mate with the two-speed cases described above, so you May also need need the proper auto bull gear to match with the donor t-case. Chris or someone else May be able to answer that more definitively for you.

**be sure to use a proper t-case to trans gasket not sillysnot, as the gasket creates a very thin spacer shim, while the smeared goo does not. Sillysnot boogerworms love to fornicate inside gear boxes and crankcases...yucky! Don't let 'em do it!

Ok guys, thanks for the info. Was that single speed unit rare? Was it only built on a couple of years? So my 72 came with the amc 258, and 3speed manual. So what would the transfercase most likely be? It is sitting in the warehouse where we did the engine/tranny swap. Would this transfer case line up, to the 304 auto?

This is an IH model tc-143 single speed, chain driven transfer case. The IH code is 13143. They came in either frame mounted (divorced for full size apps) or transmission mounted (married sii apps) variations. I wouldn't call them rare, just less common and primarily intended for situations requiring only basic additional traction. They are not well suited for use in a dedicated trail rig or a even a multi-use hunting rig that encounters situations where low range gear reduction becomes advantageous. In other words, they're more of a rural soccer-Mom, grocery getter setup. I'm not certain what years these units were available, but I would guess at least up through m/y 1975, and perhaps beyond.

The lever shift, two speed case that was originally behind your 3spd man trans is a model tc-145 code 13145, more commonly referred to as a Dana 20. Yes, it will work behind your auto trans, but you will need to source what is commonly referred to as an auto bull gear which would be secured to the rear of your auto trans with a large nut, with the transfer case removed. The gear attached to the output shaft of your manual transmission is a manual bull gear, and will not work on the auto trans. The chain drive t-case does not utilize a bull gear for coupling to the transmission. Jeff here at IH Parts America can probably source a good, used auto bull gear for you if you call the store during business hours.
 
The only other hang up maybe driveshafts. Iirc the single speed transfer case is a bit thinner than the two speed Dana
 
That's a valid observation regarding prop shaft length as it relates to different t-case thicknesses. The shafts that were originally with the 258/3spd/d20 setup May get you closer. If the shafts are too long, they can always be shortened by a machine shop.
