4 Speed, synchro?

I have a 73 Scout II with a 304 v8 and 4 speed manual. Shifting into 1st (reverse also) requires the truck to either be moving or I push and hold the clutch for 10 sec. Otherwise it grinds. Another work around at stop lights is to press clutch, shift to 2nd, then up to first, then let clutch out. Is this normal? Some have suggested the trany is a "non-synchro" trany and thus normal. I have no transmission knowledge. Can anyone shed some light? Normal? Problem? If problem, what do I need to fix?
Thanks a million.

If it is a non -sync'd tranny, you must be at a complete dead stop to get it into 1st or reverse. If it's a sync'd tranny, then you May have a bad syncronizer, cause you should be able to downshift into 1st with it rolling., but at a dead stop also for reverse.. Jeff

Karl, where is reverse on your shift pattern?

Next to third or next to fourth????

This info will tell us which transmission you have in your Scout II.

Then you have a t-18 trans which has a non-synchro 1st gear. Your description of shifting is about right. Normally you'd drive this trans like a 3sp and only use 1st to start on a hill, but this depends on tire size and gear ratio. When my Scout had the oem 3.73's and stock tires it worked well. A later change to 3.54's and 32" tires and it took a lot less clutch slipping to start in 1st.

There is now a t-19 in my Scout and it is full synchro. I found the best way to drive the t-18 was to shift into 1st just as the truck came to a stop. Welcome to the IH world of manual transmissions.

Could be a t-18 or a t-18a.

T-18 will have a 6.32:1 first gear, and is driven as fdchappie describes.....as a 3-speed.

T-18a will have a 4.02:1 first gear, and May be driven as a 3-speed or a 4-speed depending on terrain, engine power, load, operator preference, etc. Although, most drive these as 4-speeds as they give good take-off acceleration in first.

T-19 and t-19a have reverse "over and down" next to fourth gear.
