392

I just got a 392-e with the cooling tubes going into the block not the head like my 304 in my Scout and the 345 in my truck. With that said what are the pros and cons of this motor and what should I do to build it up. Can I use the heads off the 345 and convert this motor to cooling tubes going into the head?

Hi doyle,
what you have is the preferred improved cooling 392 with the cooling tubes from the water pump to the block. This is a cooling upgrade that IH implemented to solve problems when the 392 was in severe big truck service :winky:

the heads/block have details that will not allow the interchange of those parts to a non ic IH v8 with the cooling tubes to the heads.

No question I would build the ic 392.

Scott, I've heard of this being done on non-ic 392 engines as a way of boosting compression. From what I've read, the gain is pretty insignificant, and the sacrifice in port size just doesn't justify it.
