304 exhaust

After my long trip with the Scout I am officially sick of my leaky manifold ticking loudly under load. Right now I have all stock exhaust no cat with a 40 series flowmaster. Id like a more throaty louder sound/tone. Im going to see about running dual exhaust. Any body have suggestions? Pipe size? Shorty or race mufflers? Not too sure about headers though....

Tough question to answer completely without injecting personal opinion. Here is what I like on a v8. The following will be loud.

For sound I feel nothing sounds better then dual exhaust through 2 chamber flowmaster's. If you want a less loudness with the same overall exhaust note 3 chamber mufflers will do. I can't stand the stuffed perforated core mufflers like magnaflow's or glass packs only chambered mufflers for me.

Now tube diameter makes a big difference. I like 3" from the collector to back for sound and performance on high performance apps. 2 1/2 is probably fine for a Scout but will lose some sound range. Exit location is a preferance item but plumb out from under the truck not just dump under body. The smell will get to you as it flows into the pasanger compartment. Out the back is best for smel.

Headers will sound better but can soften low end grunt. Over all they will make more hp and May require a slight increase in power mode fuel calibration. Personally I would put headers on it and build your next engine to take advantage of them more.

The headers will radiat more heat but should not be an issue if close critical items are protected and wraped. Don't wrap the headers.

No matter what u will always have a little bit of a heat problem their a few tricks I have seen (louvers as mentioned ,putting holes in the inner fender wells lining the tub spray on or carpet etc to help with heat ) im convertiable year round but the headers were a huge improvement sound and performance:icon_smile:

Whats the deal with the 1 chambers?

Yes stans headers with 2.5 tubing into flow masters tri chamber dumping underneath for that extra rumble my stans are black du to the dislike of chrome (cant stand chrome)

Damn wish I could hear it!!! Not on you tube by any chance?

My dual exhaust runs through exhaust manifolds, 2 1/2 pipe, and flowmaster 50 series (three chamber). It is loud enough to set off car alarms when I drive by, and it is about as loud as is acceptable for long drives. My buddy had headers that flowed into flowmaster 40 series (two chamber) and the heat from the headers and the loudness of the pipes made the truck uncomfortable to drive and difficult to talk to one another in the cab. He ended up removing the headers and putting on manifolds. He didn't notice a loss in power.

Unlike the others in this thread, I don't recommend headers unless you build an engine that can take advantage of the benefits they provide. As Robert said, you'll lose on the bottom and they'll only help you on the top end, so unless you run the truck at high rpm's (I.e. Rebuild a high performance engine with a cam), your wasting your money on headers.
