266 engine noise ?

I have a ..
1968.5 Scout 800, 266v8, 3 speed, single stick.

My Scout runs and starts great.... The weather has been very cold here around 5 - 10 dg and the noise doesn't seem to change as the engine warms up . Only time I cant tell the sound is not there is when I'm going around 55 mph

this sound has me a bit worried . Any help discerning what it could be would be greatly appreciated.


I'm not very familiar with piston slap , engine knock , or lifter noise... I took this recording from the front passenger side of my Scout. That seems to be were it is coming from... I took a recording from the exhaust as well if that might help. Its pretty faint from the cab .

Sounds like classic lifter noise to me. Immerse yourself in the stickied thread just a couple above this one. That will tell you all you need to know and more regarding the why's and wherefores of this condition and what can be done to fix it.
 
Definitely a lifter/valve train noise.

Catch it now before it takes a dump on ya. Pull the valve cover off the side that is making noise, do the other side later.
 
For diagnostic purposes, I've always found it helpful to use an IH valve cover with the top cut out of it to diagnose valve / top end oiling issues.

Makes things a lot less messy and you can actually observe your valve train in action.

I'm still reading but none of this sounds very encouraging so far. I guess ill start diagnosing a bit tomorrow but to be honest I'm a little scared to look into my oil pan..... My dipstick looks fine ... But I would imagine destroyed cam shaft bearing matter wouldn't stick anyway.

Thanks for all the time you all have put towards this whole lifter matter !!! I'm definitely learning a lot . This is an awesome forum ! Wish I would have read a few more pages before getting myself into this mess

u think I should just replace those lifters that are bad and keep on trucking ? Is there a considerable sound difference when a cam bearing is bad ?
 
Don't replace anything until you have done the complete check-up on each side of the engine. Do one side and confirm/deny issues, then do the other side.

Once both sides are done, then we'll look at the future plan.
