Rebuilding my 76' Scout II 4cy (196) . It has a stock 2 barrel Holley and I'm wondering if there is any advantage ( fuel economy , hp etc ) in upgrading to a Holley 4 barrel. She runs rough and I know this carb needs rebuilt either way , just thought if anyone had luck with an upgrade??

Not worth it. Way over kill to have a 4 popper on a 4 banger. If you had the 258 straight six or an 8 cylinder then it wouldn't be too much a problem. I had a holly 390 four popper on my 74 inline 6 and that was borderline overkill. But for a 4 cylinder, I wouldn't even consider it. There are a couple upgrades for the 196 carb. But I'm not that familiar with them. Robert kenney would be more knowledgable about it though

You actually have a one barrel carb and when in top condition it provides plenty of air and fuel for your 196 from idle to wide open throttle under load. Not only would a 4-barrel be overkill as kimball noted, but you'd have to enter the twilight zone in order to successfully mod-fabrify a practical way for your intake to accept a four-throat monster.

Excelent info! Thanks guys, I'm a pretty good electrician but I'm kind of feeling my way through engine tech ;)
