I have a 1978 Scout traveller and the steering box is leaking from the steering column input shaft are there seals available for this, or do you have to buy a remanufactured? And I May be really stupid but I cant find the spring over axle on IH Parts America catalog, any help would be appreciated? Thanks:yikes:

Welcome to ihon!

Probably way less than one half of our available/on-the-shelf inventory is shown in the online store. Once we get moved into the new building, major emphasis is going to be put into posting hundreds of additional items online, that will be sooner than later!

A seal kit for your steering gear is available, but before ya call and order, please measure/verify the diameter of the input shaft. Two different ps gears were used in the Scout II and even though the parts list May show only one for the '78 model, the gear itself (along with any other part!) could have been swapped out at some point in time.

Hopefully the op will forgive the hijack as I do think it will add to the discussion. How difficult is it to replace the seals on these boxes? Are there special tools required? Does the average novice stand a good chance of performing a successful repair? We all know how scarce these sii boxes are becoming. They're finding their way onto non-Scout applications with increasing frequency. I was lucky enough to find a good, leak-free used one last fall for a great price. I'd still like to have a go at repairing my original, but the "conventional wisdom" that I've heard about doing so has given me pause. The box in fwb johnboy's sii is leaking like a sieve also. Maybe this might spawn the next "how to" sticky thread and get some repair kits moving.
