Just bought my first Travelall. How can I identify which motor it has?

If a v8, look on a small area 1"x 2", just above fuel pump on passenger side , below the front corner of the head. On the block. Gotta clean it real good to.

That is a hard spot to see. Some general guide lines are 4bbl carb = 392, 2bbl carb and dip stick mounted by bottom hole = 345 or by top hole = 304.

This photo shows the engine id area within the red circle......

If dipstick is bolted to bottom hole = 304 because of the lower deck just like the 152, top hole =392,345,196, because of the taller deck.

Dang it Jeff, I got that one wrong again. Thanks for the correction. Any way this is just a general guide line because a po can mix and match a lot of different parts when building an engine. My 345 has a 392 4bbl manifold on it.

also I read somewhere that the horsepower that is on the door tag, can tell which motor. Any truth about that

Yes, if you know the advertised hp and/or torque ratings for the various engine sizes...and if the engine is original to the truck and actually matches the data plate. Swaps happen often.
