No, it's a good house keeping thing. The gasket itself is meant to handle the bulk of the sealing duty. If the mating surfaces are clean and entirely free of imperfections, the gaskets can go on completely dry. That's exactly why I like the Copper coat. All it does is minimize mating surface imperfections and provide some gasket adhesion. That's all you need.
 
I've always been a champion of gasket only, but my oldest car before this one was 2013. I understand it's normal for many of the mating surfaces on these trucks to have pitting / corrosion and not be perfect, which is why I was advised to use RTV (Permatex blue in this case).

I trust your advice over some youtuber! I'll pick up so copper coat and do it right. Thank you.

Just get a cocking gun tube size of Permatex Ultra Black or the "Right Stuff."
