1964 scout 80 idiot lights stay on

I've got a question: when I shut my truck off , sometimes the oil and amp light stay lit.. Does anyone know why? Is it common?

They stay on for a min or so, sometimes less.. I've tapped the voltage regulator and sometimes that does it and the lights go off.. But not evertime. I'm thinking it's got sometime to do with the regulator... Thoughts?

I don't know. Maybe. I'd be more inclined to think maybe the ignition switch is sticking between on and off, since those lights illuminate whenever you switch the key to on.

It would be easy to try unplugging the regulator when this happens and see if the lights go out. I do seem to remember seeing this back in the day lots of vehicles had remote regulators. If that does resolve it, pull the cover and see if any of the contacts are sticky.

Well I took the regulator out and I cleaned the points.. For now at least the idiot lights aren't staying on after I shut the truck down.. Thanks everyone for your input. I'll keep you posted if the problem returns.

Well it's been a week, and the idiot lights are beginning to stay on again when I shut the truck off.. Here a funny observation though.. When after I shut the truck off, sometimes when I slam the drivers door shut the lights go out... Is this more indication that the switch might be bad?? When I slam the door does it jostle something in the switch??

Possibly. The switch is easy to access and test with a meter. Disco battery, label wires as needed then check for continuity between 'b' terminal and 'I' terminals. Should only be present when switch is turned to on position. Off should show no continuity between 'b' and any other terminals. Cleaning contacts and resetting wires May be enough to resolve the issue if you get lucky.
