Backing plate question 1976 SII - Dana 44.

Need to repair the Scout II - bearing disintegrated and dropped the axle out coming off the highway for nv445.

Didn't flip it and got it towed, and got new axles shafts and bearing waiting at summit. Problem is that I skidded down the road on the backing plate for the rear drum.

Any other backing plates will bolt up to the Dana 44 on a Scout? Ive got 15" wheels and would be ok with changing the drums and shoes to get it back on the road instead of spending $1400 for discs.

I'd call IHPA during business hours tomorrow to see if they could scare you up a good used backing plate. While you're at this repair, you should also look into the thicker bearing retainer plates for both sides also available from IHPA. You've now unfortunately discovered, like myself and plenty of others before you, that the puny and pathetic stock retainer plates don't retain a damned thing. They're a total joke. Glad no one was hurt and there was no significant damage to the rig. Pretty lucky.

Very lucky! Turns out the truck skidded about 100 feet on the backing plate, but only bent the plate at the bottom and barely squared off the steel there, so aside from a small 'window' into the drum, there wasn't really any damage.

Following up several months later - I was able to salvage the backing plate, put on a new set of shoes, springs, and replaced both outside axle bearings and seals along with the axle shafts , and I ordered and installed those thicker bearing retainers you mentioned. Thanks for the advice! She's up and running better than ever. Luckily this failure happened on the way to the desert outside of reno, and summit racing had the parts I needed in stock at the time. I got the thicker retainers from our hosts here, though.
