What all would I need to swap a 727 in place of a 4 speed in my 72 with a 304?
Also what specific 727 should I be looking for?
Thanks for any help

The basics
a 727 specific for the IH motors. The bell housing and tail shaft are specific to IH.

A flex plate for the 727

if you want to get fancy, you can swap out all three pedals in favor of the two pedal asymbly that came standard on the automatic IH's - I personally have made that swap in one of my scouts many years ago.

If you source an IH 727, you might want to source a package deal with transfer case and transmission together. And possibly the flex plate too.

This question gets asked several times every year.
Either someone going manual to auto or auto to manual.

I suggest you go thru the threads and find others that are going the opposite direction that you are going and contact them.

Maybe you two can work a trade of the parts each other needs.

You will need the IH specific cased 727 for Scout II 4x4 or 4x2 (you didn't provide this info), torque converter, flex plate and spacer, throttle pressure linkage from carb to trans, single brake pedal assembly, floor shifter assembly with shifter cable, and associated hardware for everything above.
Auto trans cooler and fluid lines.
Fluid fill tube & dipstick.
Transmission mount.
And some other items I am sure I forgot.

Thanks. It's a 4x4. I tried searching but I can't find any threads of anybody wanting to go from a manual to automatic. Tons of threads the other way around. I'm either getting old or lazy, maybe both but I want an automatic.
Thanks for a starting point.

That limits you to a 727 from another 4x4 sii...unless you want to completely refit a 727 from a pickup/ta or 4x2 Scout to swap in the correct married t-case output shaft, planet gears and adapter housing. Nah, you don't want to go there.

I've got everything from a d series pickup. All the bits, kick down linkage, but you'll need a tail housing and bull gear to make it work with your d20.

Another option, and more expensive is to buy the trans adaptor for the GM 700r4 trans and use that tranny.
At least it would give you overdrive.
