We are having trouble with a transmission leak on the bell housing at 8 o'clock. This hole has just happened due to the truck sitting most of the winter. Cannot find diagrams for this and was wondering what this hole is that is throwing out fluid. All cooling lines are connected. Is it a plug hole? Please help. We would like to put this truck on the road this spring. Thank you.

The transmission is a 727

Welcome to the forum. How profuse is the leak? Have you been able to positively id the leaking fluid? Atf is normally red in color. Leaking motor oil is often dark brown or black. Seems like an unlikely place for an atf leak. Motor oil is a stronger possibility. Those bellhousing bolt holes don't penetrate the engine oil gallery. My best guess is the source of the leak is actually higher up on the engine, perhaps from the valve cover on that side and trickling down to that bolt location.

Lets say the person who previously owned this truck did not drive it but once every two years and it has sat mainly the whole 28 years we lived here. We could not see them scrap the truck so we bought it. The leak is above and to the left of the other lines above the transmission pan. With this truck sitting for so long the fluid is black. The engine oil has been changed.

727's have two common leak points above the pan on the driver side. One being the neutral start switch (nss) which is threaded into the side of the case, and the other is the shift shaft seal directly underneath the shifter and throttle valve linkages. Both are well behind the bell housing bolts though. Now if your fluid leak is atf and not motor oil, black indicates that the trans has gotten very hot and that's not good. Irregardless, forty years is a long time for atf to go unchanged, even if the truck has super low miles. If the fluid hasn't been changed in the last ten years, that's something you should add to your to-do list. That and a filter change and a band inspection and adjustment. That requires dropping the pan and its a messy job. Is this rig drivable? How does it shift when you drive it?

Every gear shifts great, it was only driven less than 50 miles before we started working on it to find the problem areas. One was the carburator which is now working. This next is the transmission, we are in the process of changing the fluid and putting new filter and gasket. The hole that is leaking is threaded. If it is a place for a switch there are no wires leading to it that can be seen. It is just as the bell housing starts to flange out. It would be nice to know if there is a diagram to show exactly where it is, and what it is.

Sounds like something is missing. I currently have two 727's sitting on the bench. It maybe adjustment stud with lock nut that May have came loose over the years and fell out.

If you can, try to take a photo of where it leaks.

I agree with the picture request. The written description thus far is too vague to formulate a conclusive diagnosis.
