dumb question (tf727)

How much fluid and what kind of fluid do I put in a dry tf727? Ive heard to use dexron 3 and not to use it, and to use atf3 or 4 and not to use it, then I heard some guy say put 90wt in it. Also is there a special procedure to checkin the fluid level?

Please don't use 90wt. I've used dexron iii the entire time, this is not a recommendation so much as a personal experience I'm sharing. It's worked for me so far.

As far as capacity... It hold around 8qt total, but that will include the torque converter. Most people put in 4.0qt to start with, then crank, then add fluid. If the tc is not full it will slowly fill while the transmission is in n, from what I understand about these transmissions. So set parking brake, put it in n, and crank with 4 quarts. Add the rest as the torque converter fills, adding too fast will apparently cause a lot of fluid loss out of the transmission vent.

As for checking the level, check it in neutral with the fluid up to temp. That temp May take a while to happen in any given application but I always check mine after a good amount of driving. Checking it in park won't supply you with a correct indication from the factory.

Only dumb question is the one never asked

for these 727 torqueflights dex/merc or dextron fluid only. First, make sure your vehicle is on level ground. As mentioned previousely, start off with 4 quarts. Then start motor up and let it warm up to operating temps - without driving it. Checking transmision fluid along the way. Also while your ig is warming up shift the gear shifter in the tranny, hesitating between all the gears as you're shifting.once it's warmed up then do a check and/or fill of trans fluid.
Cheers

To add to what has been posted we will safely jack up the rear axle and run thru each gear, stop and put in neutral to check fluid level until the appropriate level is reached. A fresh trans normally takes 11 quarts to fill if using the stock pan. We use swepco atf found on our online store.

Alright sounds easy enough. One more question, ive heard to run 50wt "racing oil" in the Dana 20 tcase, does this sound like agood idea?

You've been well covered by the others on your trans fluid questions. Dexron iii was the standard spec for the tf727 back in the day. That version has been superseded numerous times over the years by later versions, which are all engineered to be backwards compatible. Dex/merc is one of those. Like Jeff said, the swepco offering available from the online store would be your top shelf choice. These units are very robust when in top condition with quality parts installed and all adjustments to spec. You'd be amazed at what fluids they will function on in that condition, and quite well too. But, the safe money is always on using what the manufacturer recommends.
As for the t-case, swepco also offers a top shelf gear lube also available through ihon that is superior for manual gear boxes, t-cases, and axle differentials. Aside from that, in the standard retail realm, single vis 50 wt motor oil is an appropriate choice for the IH t-case and manual gear boxes. In that realm, gear lube should only be used in the axle diffs.

Dex II was the factory spec, but that was updated to dex iii due to the lockup converter additives needed to fix their longevity.
