Hello, I posted this question on my build thread, but scoutboy74 was kind enough to inform me I would get more help if I posted it here.
Scout is 76 terra 2wd 4spd 304 2210 carb gold box icm(believe this makes it a holly distributor) sat for 10 years after developed a pop that previous owner thought was valve work needed. I fixed two dime sized holes in the muffler and pop is gone.
I've got maybe 10hours of drive time on a rebuilt carb/new to me gas tank/fuel lines blown out with air. Truck runs great with no flat spots/stumbles. Feels as peppy as my 76 Bronco with mild built 302. New cap and rotor, 10 year old wires, new plugsno timeing or carb idle adjusting yet. It sounds like my idle is probably high
truck has failed to start/quit a total of 3 times
first, it had sat for a week, went to fire it up, cranked it over almost a whole batteries worth of juice(in small increments to not fry starter) and no firing. Didn't have time to fiddle with it that day, so just went and pulled the linkage to insure I had a good gas to carb which I did.
Next day have more time, go to fiddle with it, figure I will check and see if she will fire before I tear into it. It fires right up. Without even recharging the battery with my charger.
Next fail, drive about 20min out to my parents farm, half way up bumpy driveway, and it dies, no sputter like with a fuel system issue, just engine off like a switch. I go to make sure my brother doesn't have to get the tractor past for a bit, come back 5 min later, again decide to try to fire it up before messing with it. Fires right up. Drive it a short way, fill up with boxes from recent move, drive to another part of the farm do same, drive 20min home, no problem.
Third time, doing the same lap pick up boxes from parents barn, come back towards our house, stop at a few garage sales on the way so several stop and start cycles. Last one go to start it up, click click click. No engine turn over. Try a few more times and finally she fires right up.
Sometimes my engine will crank slower or faster when I click on the starter. Have new oversize battery, new negative cable, new terminal on pos bat cable end, all battery cable connections cleaned up shiny and new.
Take the gold box into napa to have tested, guy says tested it three times and came up good, it was slightly warm to the touch when I got it back, guy says he likes to do 3x testing to help get them warm enough to simulate real world conditions, but no way is it as hot as real life.
Let me know if you need any other info. Thanks again for any advice, this site has been very helpful to me.
