Yukon Spartan

I was browsing the locker section at the ihon store and saw the Yukon spartan. Anyone have experience with this? Is it applicable to an old Scout 800 tapered axle d44?

Questions about install: can the install be done with the carrier still in the truck? Even though I recently rebuilt my d44, I can't remember exactly how it all goes together... Do I have to pull bearings and seas out to get the axles out? Do I have to unseat the hub from the taper?

Thanks!

Surfed around and remembered that the tapered axle is 19 spline, not 30, so the spartan won't work. Is there any sort of locker (not posi) available for the tapered 44?

Sure, the Dana/spicer power lok was optional equipment on your Scout.

For your relatively light off road intended usage it should be ok.

That's limited slip though, right? I have an Auburn lsd in my k5 and I hate dealing with the chatter and nonsense that goes with it. The detroit I have in my pickup is far preferable.

I'm guessing a shadetree mechanic can't install a power lok either? I mean, you have to be able to setup the r&p, which is slightly advanced skill.

A properly set up and functional limited slip unit of any type is totally silent in actual operation.

A Powr-Lok can be set up to be very aggressive or very passive, that choice is made when the clutch pak is set up during installation.

Chattering and noise when turning with a limited slip in either end means there is something wrong, that is not a design characteristic.

Two years ago, an Auburn unit for a 19 spline d44 was on the shelf locally at six states, they have since shut down operation in some locations.

Correct - a powerlock or truetrac or detroit for that matter are all 'full case' lockers - meaning they replace the entire differential. The spartan and lockright are spider gear replacement lockers and if you are carefully they can be installed without changing any of the gear setup variables.

With the right tools and enough time a shadetree mechanic 'could' teach himself how to setup gears though....

A little searching shows that auburns, lock-rights and detroits are all available for d44 19-spline. Others May be too, but I found those right away.

Mastiff:
if you are still interested in a lunchbox locker for your Scout's d44 w/19 spline axles, powertrax lockright makes one, #loc2413
