won't turn over

Noob question:

I have a new-to-me 1978 Scout II, 4 cyl, ran beautifully when I bought it this summer. 4x4, manual trans., pretty much stock.

Had some trouble getting it started (I think I flooded it, took forever to get it running, took a long time to warm up, but then ran and re-started fine) one day, then started it a few days later and let it high idle while I did some other stuff. When I came back and tapped the gas, it died and would not even turn over or "click". I had to go do other stuff, but I haven't been able to get it to turn on since. No headlights, radio, nothing. The warn winch has power and reels in just fine, so I think the battery is fine, but neither key gets it to turn over, and the radio and lights don't work.

I've read that the exhaust runs too close to the starter - could I have melted/overheated something while I let it high idle for so long?

Where should I look / what should I try?

Thanks for any experience and guidance you can share.

One simple thing you could try is to disconnect and clean your bulk head connector. It May be that it is just popped loose.

Indeed, those crapy bulkhead fittings are just that = crap. They also have a tendency to fall off. I had that happen to me in my 72 Scout when I was driving it.

Also, just because your winch May work what seems fine, the battery May not be up to snuff to crank over the motor. Again, happened to me on my 74 Scout a few months ago(in July). Battery would not take or hold a charge.

Just to name a few things that May cause issues

Good suggestions regarding the troublesome bhc. In addition, inspect, clean, and tighten as necessary your battery terminal connections, ground connections, and also the connections at your starter solenoid.
