won't cool when super hot out?

My IH partner has a '97 dodge dakota sport p'up,4wd,we use to retrieve ihc's,an we just got back from a 500 mile trip.the ac works good when it cools down outside or is raining out.but when it's sunny an 95* or hotter,it won't kool.any suggestion's? Thx-Jeff ( thought maybe the dryer May be bad? )
 
What are the gauge readings? Or have you put gauges on it to see what the pressures are? Have you checked for any visible leaks? Condenser free of debris? Do all your basic checks first as would any shop would do when performing a a/c diagnostic check.
