Will it work???

I have "found" a fresh 392 built by an IH mechanic available for my 78 Scout II. I've searched here looking for the answer to my situation, but no luck. What I'd like to do: 392 w/t-19 to Dana 20 t-case. I have the d-20, bell housing/clutch assy. From a 304 and the 392 available. Still looking for the t - 19.

Am I barking up the wrong tree trying this combo???

As we've sta6ted many times in the [past, this type operation is certainly fairly easy to perform.

But...the flywheel for that engine must be "neutral balanced" by a machine shop since it did not come on the engine (392) itself. Please do this so you don't end up with either a mild or heavy engine shake when finished up.

Any of the sv flywheels will work, as long as you have a clutch cover that matches the mounting holes on it's face. Simply have it's friction surface checked and ground, then the entire assembly is to be neutral balanced.

Excellent!!! I really appreciate your knowledge. The guy that has this is a retired dealership IH "diesel" mechanic. I probably could have asked him, but really thinking about it, he probably would have told me it wouldn't work when we were talking!!!

The clutch/flywheel/balance is not an issue!!! I have a great source and it's close.

I'm really excited to get this engine!!! It was built 5 - 6 yrs. Ago just b/c he had it and he could. It's never been buttoned up, either top or bottom end, so there are some variables that can be adapted. It has new main, rod & cam bearings, new slugs, new stock cam & lifters. Intake & exhaust mainfolds, valley cover & base not installed. Not sure what year the casting is, but not a concern? Everything's accessible to inspect/complete. Thermoquad & intake, choice of style base's come with it. I'll be looking for a mild grind cam, headers, do some port & polish and go from there!! Can"t wait to get this in my shop!!!

Open to cam suggestions? I'll be road & beach driving, 3.73 d-44 front & rear. Probably looking at a 35" tire max. SOA, reverse shackle and whatever else it takes to make it work!! Yeehaw!!!!

Color me jealous. I'm pretty pleased with the way my bone stock 392 works in my Scout. It winds out nice and strong to 4k at which point I have to let off to avoid floating the valves. Those are the times I ponder what it would be like to have at least another thousand useful rpms out of that engine. Feels weird to bail out just when things are getting good. A "massaged" 392 should be really sweet. Enjoy:thumbsup:

I'm bringing this thread back b/c I'm about as clear as mud on this "neutral balance" issue and I'm getting ready to put this together. The flywheel, pp & harmonic balancer I'm using all came from the same 304. If I keep all those parts together to install on the 392, in phase, what can I expect? I will have the flywheel resurfaced. Mr. Mayben mentions "neutral balancing". Does this balancing mean I have to remove the crank and have it spun and match the other parts to it? I didn't realize I was so dumb!?!?!?!?

Might be an old thread but a very valid concern to inquire about.

If you bolt the two 304 crank endings (balancer and flywheel) to your 392, you will have a balanced engine for the most part.

The only way to get it better is as you mentioned, to remove the crank and sent it along with a rod, piston, rings and a rod bearing to a balance shop. They will weigh the components that make up the connecting rod and piston to calculate the Bob weight. The crank, flywheel and balancer can be properly weighted ( Bob weight) on the rod journals and spun. They can make the assembly perfectly balanced by removing small amounts of mass from the crank.

neutral balancing usually refers to an engine that does not require an externally non neutrally balanced flywheel and balancer. Like a 4 cylinder as an example.

In your case you'll be 99% of the way to a balanced engine the way you are planning to go. IH went the extra mile as I wrote in my long boring paragraph above.

Thanks!!! Robert!!! You have made my year!! The 392 is, literally, brand new. I bought it from an IH mechanic of 42 years that built it to put in a t'all for pulling events. He was very meticulous and I'm sure the engine is as good as it gets! It has never been started & was built several years ago. All new internals. The only thing I'm not sure of yet is the cam. He had the spec sheets for 2 but couldn't remember which one he put in this engine? I'm changing the valve springs so I'll figure the cam out then.
