Which to buy?

Hello all. I'm in the process of putting my rebuilt 304 back in the Scout and have some extra money for only 1 part and don't know which one to buy. I can either buy the the 4bbl intake or the dui distributor. I have a set of stan's headers and running a stock cam. If it was your money what would you do? Thanks Joe

If you buy the 4bbl intake, you will need a carburetor as well. So if you only have the money for one of the other, I would go wit the ignition.

If it were mine, I would put in a pertronix kit, save a little bit of cash over the next few months, and go with a TBI set-up.

I have a carb. Not interested in the fuel injection.

I will tell you that in all honesty, if I had it to do over again, I would have left my 2bbl alone and not worried about it. There are a few performance gains, but it would probably be more of a talking point than a big performance upgrade.

We fight ignition woes all the time with our engines. I would be hard pressed not to make that my priority. But make sure you have the clearance to fit the dui in your engine. It is a tight fit in there and I think you have to clearance the water neck even on a 345.

Depending on how you drive your truck, I'm not convinced a 4bbl carb helps much on non performance motors..

On my 304, with manual transmission and 4.27 gears, my 2 bbl is way more than enough carb for my motor.

And for the way I plan to use my truck, I would also go efi as I live at sea level and plan to wheel at 5000 feet plus so driveability would be affected from that kind of altitude change that efi automatically will compensate for.

But if you already have a carb and headers and a good working dizzy, I suppose the intake would be better of the two.

Based on you responses regarding efi and I think you are correct on staying with a carb, even though with sufficient tuning it can run well the gains are simply not enough to justify the efi on a stock 304.

A stock 304 with a stock cam I would have to say stay with the 2bbl carb and stock exhaust the headers will soften the low end performance, but upgrade the ignition. Many ways to go with the dui being the most costly. Triggering a msd or similar box with a tuned up points or mallory dizzy is how I would go. While the dui is a good sound system it has a lot of potential fitments issues.

One way to go is to build up using the stock iron manifolds then switch to the stans and see if you like it.
