Which is the best alternator option

Have a 71 Scout II pretty much stock 345 and I think my 64 amp delco alternator is not kickin anymore. I need to do a couple of checks on the wiring set up but I think it is shot.

Anyways just wondering what the best options are for a modest upgrade with more amps but not shocking the system.

If you've still got the original wiring, keep in mind that it was marginal and many of the circuits undersized 40 years ago when new. You May not want to go anything beyond a 10si until the wiring has been upgraded.

Sorry did not mention that I did upgrade the wiring with a ez 21 circuit kit so all is good in that department.

Have you utilized an amp probe to test what you are actually drawing? Oversizing just for the hell of it isn't always the best option. The stock alternator has a retail cost of 30$ and has a max output of 63a. Do you have a winch, super sound system, aux lighting, any big users?

I do plan to pull it off and get it fully tested and see what the output is so it has not been tested yet. I do not have any big users as of yet but I would like to get a winch in the near future. Ya I agree I do not want to something that throws out alot of amps if I do not need it that is why I want to know what everyone thinks is the best fit for the rig.

But seriously, there is a top notch write-up here in the electrical tech subforum. And also check out the mad electrical website, lots of good info on the GM style wiring harnesses.(that's what most aftermarket harnesses are) hth
