What motor?

I am looking at getting a Scout II and am unsure what motor to go with. I would like to know more about my choices. I have seen them with the 345 and 304 from IH and have seen the 258 amc. I like how easy parts are to get for the 258 due to the fact they were used in jeeps for many years. I wonder if the Jeep parts can be used in a Scout with no problem (4 barrel carb and intake, headders, starters, alternaters, ect). Please tell me any information you have on any engine choice, ease to work on, avalibilty of parts, mpg, power ect.

There is really no advantage of any of the various engines used in Scout II platforms other than the lighter weight of the amc motor series. And while that series was a common Jeep app, there were far more rambler/amc passenger vehicles produced with 'em.

Service parts for any of those engines are readily available, as well as "upgrade" parts.

So it comes down to what you are gonna do with the rig and the overall condition of a possible candidate. As the supply of Scout II dwindles due to rotting away, being used as parts donors for various components, increasing interest from vintage vehicle collectors who are not IH enthusiasts, etc., the supply of nice rigs is beginning to diminish to the point where ya can't be choosy about "which" one is desirable....any sii that is not rotten is desirable!

If I were to get one with a amc 258, would the Jeep parts like 4 barrel carb and intake, headders, starters, alternaters, ect fit on the motor with no problems if it was in a Scout II? Or do I need to get parrts made for the Scout II?

Yes, as a general rule. As you know there are production variables that May preclude the rule but the amc 258 was outa the same plant and of the same parts pile as a j@@p of the same vintage and any aftermarket power adder will like wise fit.

Headers are the exception as they are designed to fit the j@@p tub and not a Scout II. You can probably modify them to work though I can't say how much fabing will be required.
