What is this hole in the timing cover for?

266 v8 has a 1.25" hole that goes into the timing cover just above the fuel pump. It did not have a plug in it when I got it. What went/goes in this hole? Can I just put a expanding plug in it?

Its blocked already. Otherwise, the engine would puke oil everywhere.
Other models used a curved pipe here to fill the engine with oil. In that situation, the cover was machined for a hole.
You're good. No need for plugs.

Ya that was the oil fill location on older engines i believe, yes you can use a plug to fill it. Why someone would have built it with a gaping hole there is beyond me.

I noticed it was open when I rebuilt it but forgot about it until I went to start it. I was thinking I was missing a part.

Thanks.

Ya put a cup style expansion plug in there with some sealant around it. Hopefully you don't have to take the timing cover back off to get a straight whack at it.
