Hey guys,

new to the forums and to Scout ownership....loving and hating my rig at the same time.

Quick question I have a 1972 Scout 2 304 and my water pump is leaking and I was going to replace it but they asked me if I needed the magnetic one. I didnt understand him so I wanted to see if you guys could help with this picture. Also, is there anything else I should replace while im in there? Thanx in advance!

If it was me, id double belt the water pump/alternator.

What is that spark plug and house clamping off?

Maybe the part guy met what kind of fan do you have ??? Is the “big” nut water pump a magnetic clutch ? From the looks of the picture, you have the "normal" water pump not the "big" nut style

im sure if you call the store they will get you’re the correct water pump.

Welcome to the forum. There's nothing really magnetic about the big nut style water pump and clutch fan combo. I'm not sure why it is referenced that way, but in some parts literature it still is. It is easily identifiable by the very large, solitary nut that retains the thermal clutch to the pump body. Like the previous member said, you don't have that design. You have the 4 bolt hub style with a direct/non-clutch fan blade. Very interesting, "agricultural" usage of a spark plug to block off one of the heater hoses. If you're wondering why your heater doesn't work, that's the main reason. You've got the fan shroud in place which is one of the most important components of the cooling system. You've got the necessary pulleys to run dual alternator belts, so that suggestion is a good one.

Thank you guys, and I'm not sure why the original owner blocked them off but I have plenty of other things to fix before that :) (summer is coming soon and I live in cali, whats a heater ?? Lol)

what are the benefits to a dual pulley? First I've heard of it.

Each belt only carries 1/2 the load and if one fails you still have another. Murphie's law says that if a belt fails you will be the furthest you've ever been in the woods from a replacement belt.

So I figured I would do the dual belt since I'm already setup. The current belt on there is a goodyear gatorback 15595. However when I go to goodyears site, it tells me that a different belt (15606) is used in that position.

Thoughts ?

Buy 2 new belts of the same size. If the 15595 fits go with it, the books are not always right on Scout stuff. The reason you want matched belts is that as a belt wears it will ride lower in the pulley grooves and this changes the ratio's between the pulley's a bit. A new belt will fight with the old belt over the difference and cause more friction and wear than necessary.

Thanks for the heads up on buying 2 at the same time. Even though the 15595 fits, is the 15606 the correct one? The 15595 is 1" shorter than the 15606 and since I will be adding 2 I didn't want to put too much tension on the alternator.

Can anyone who is running dual pulleys confirm which belt they are using?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have control of the belt tension via the the lock down bolt that rides inside the slotted bracket arm. So long as that bolt isn't bottoming out on either end of the adjustment travel range, you can achieve proper tension with either belt.

since I will be adding 2 I didn't want to put too much tension on the alternator.

Proper tension is when you can deflect the belt with your thumb 3/8" midway between the water pump pulley and the alternator pulley. The nice thing about the poly corded belts is they don't stretch or very little if at all. You'll probably only have to set tension once then.

Hey! Is that a spark plug being used as a hose plug in the first photo?? I like the steampunk look.
