Changing a V345 into a V304 ???

Hello all.

Please refer to this thread :icon_biggrin: -

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/readers-rides/12420-International-harvester-xf4-army-prototype.html

I have quite a dilemma :frown5:

here in australia, the v304 motor is very scarce. The v345 however, is very common. As I wish to restore my rare xf4 back to original condition, I am on the hunt for a complete v304 here in western australia.

If I do not find a v304, my next option would be to install a v345. I do have a good running engine in mind (out of a IH Scout). It has had the heads recently replaced and was a daily driver for the owner for many years.

My question is this, can a v345 motor be converted to a v304? My understanding is that the v345 is identical to the v304 but has a taller deck for the longer stroke. Can this deck be shaved down to v304 size and can v304 connecting rods, pistons and push rods be installed?

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

You would be better and probably cheaper sending a block from the us

all the head bolts holes would be messed up. The other major drawback is the block is the not the same at the top as it is on the side. To re-engineer the block would probably be a futile effort

I've got a '70 304 here I'll give you. Just come and get it. That sure is a cool truck. Why didn't it get past the prototype stage? Does it have a divorced tansfercase? Did they bolt the 302 to the IH tranny or change out the whole unit? Congrats on your find!

Thanks blue smoke:thumbsup:.

I can see what you mean re: head bolts. Didn't think of that one. I'll take your advice and seek an original 304 motor.

your welcome that rig you have is way cool! I would love to see it finished

Hello blue smoke

will keep the forum posted on progress. Restoration will depend on a couple of business decisions to be made in the near future.

Btw, as you are from wisconsin, are you a green bay packer fan? My son and I are. We here in perth get three games of nfl each Monday morning (live usa time). Love the game :d
