V-8 345 exhaust - What works?

I've always wanted to know what is the best exhaust for the v-8 345. Is it dual exhaust with a cross-over pipe? Headers with dual exhaust, or a fairly large pipe (3 inch) single exhaust? Obviously, gas mileage is the optimum reason. Also, since this is a 79 345 / thermoquad with a tf 727 behind it, it's running a catalytic conveter in callifornia. We all want to get good gas mileage and I realize that the 345 is not a good "breather" from the exhaust ports, so I would like to get some thoughts from anyone.

Just trying to get a handle on this before I get the exhaust redone. Thanks.

Ya might get a bit more info if you asked a more specific question. Are you looking for just mpg? Towing, off roading? There are so many combos of engine, chassis and usage scenarios it would almost be impossible to determine "best". On my Scout I run a set of stan's 4 into 1 headers, 2.25" exhaust and turbo mufflers. The engine is a 345, t19 4 speed 3:54 gears 32" tires, 4" lift, Holley 390 and comp 252 cam. All around mpg is now 12.5-13. Also the engine is running '71 heads with no air injection ports.

If in California, you will need a stock exhaust.

On mine I did the 2 1/4 into a 3" down the drivers side.

If you want gas mileage look to fuel injection.
