Transmission Swap

I have a 73 Scout II with the 345 v8 in it. I am wanting to swap out my 727 automatic with a manual tranny. Am researching needed components. Would greatly appreciate any advice/info as well as recommendations on finding a good trans. All advice is appreciated.

Welcome to the forums dude. Lots of knowledge in here. Along with a great resource for parts in the store icon on top of each and every page. Ihon is great to work with :winky:

do a search here in the forums. There has been a rash of inquiries recently asking this very same thing.

I went the opposite direction in my 72 Scout. From manual to automatic. Then I swaped out the brake/clutch pedal assembly and installed the proper brake pedal assembly for an automatic.

The brake/clutch pedal assembly, which I still have here on the shelf, is one of the items you would need for this type of swap. Plus shifter and/or linkage, depending on manual trans you are planning on installing.

Others in here will add more input. Hopefully those who have actually done the swap.

The best thing you can do is find another sii with v8 and manual trans with a shot body. Buy it cheap so you have everything you need. There is a laundry list of parts required to do the swap. Trying to accumulate all the pieces in a random fashion will make you old before your time and could get kinda spendy.

Had a fella here at my shop space yesterday who has a 79 Scout II. His came with the t727 auto. And he swaped it out and installed a manual trans and had the proper brake/cluch assembly put in too. He had the shifter in the floor. I think he said it was the t98(my feeble brain forgot) wide ratio with a Dana 300 mounted behind it.

That was my plan only concern is knowing the condition of trans and components on a junk vehicle especially since most have had so many owners. Do you think the trans would need rebuilt? Also wondering if anyone has an idea of how long the prpject should take (roughly). Trying to do it as fast as possible. Thanks for all your help guys

If you are completely un aware of the actual condition of the trans, then having a transmission shop take a look at it would be highly recomended. Maybe even going ahead with a rebuild of the unit.

If you are pulling the transmision out of the vehicle yourself, then you can pull the brake/clutch pedal assembly out at the same time. You will need that since your current configuration does not have a clutch pedal. When ya pull the manual trans out of old junk vehicle, you're gonna need the fly wheel

plus, do yourself a favor and install new clutch while you are doing the swap. Might need to have flywheel slightly machined. Might even consider getting neew fly wheel, if the old used one is bad
