tranny swap

I have a 72 harvester 1210 p/u 345 v8 witha 727 auto. I want to swap it out with a 5 speed manual. I need to know what tranny will bolt to it with out an adapter plate.

Not sure if needed but this is a 2wd

IH offered two 5 speed transmissions in the full size - pickup / Travelall (special order) -- t-34 (5 speed overdrive) and t-36 (5 speed direct).

I have read of another "IH" transmission (t-35 also a 5 speed direct with slightly different gear ratios) -- it appears these were put in loadstars and other medium duty IH trucks.

The problem is that they are somewhat difficult to find (my take on what I have read) -- and probably expensive (my opinion, also).

The IH 5 speeds have their own bell housing -- not shared with IH 4 speed transmissions.

Probably need a new driveshaft, also.

Jeff (IH Parts America) offers an adapter kit for putting a nv4500 behind a sv v8.

Not sure I can explain this correctly this late...

Direct -- means that the final gear ratio out of the transmission is 1 : 1. (5th gear in the case of 5 speeds; 4th gear in the case of 4 speeds or drive in the case of 727)

overdrive -- means that the final gear ratio (5th) out of the transmission is <1 : 1.

Nowadays, most transmissions have an "overdrive" gear.

In the 60's / 70's, most transmissions did not have an "overdrive" gear.

The choice of which five speed transmission was based on the "use" -- if you towed a trailer weighing 6,000 - 8,000 lbs frequently; then, the overdrive transmission was not the best choice. There is a "wide split" between 3rd and 4th gears.

In the case of my t/a (which has a t-34), the difference between 4th (direct 1 : 1) and overdrive (5th is .83 : 1)) is approx 500 rpm for the same road speed.
