Tranny does not shift to 2nd

Hello all,

well, finally got my t-case rebuilt, so I put everything back in the Scout.

Reverse works great, as does first gear. Really made quite the difference (rebuilt tranny with a B&M kit supplied by IHOnly).

However, the transmission won't shift into second.

I have tried the following so far:

1. Adjusted kickdown lever
2. Removed and checked the operation of the governor.

I will be doing the following today:

1. Check to make sure the kick down gizmo is working the valve on the valve body
2. Disconnect the kickdown lever from the tranny to see if the tranny will shift.

Now, in case these don't do it, does anyone else have any ideas to check?

Also, if I do not put the t-case back on, as well as rear driveshaft, will I still be able to detect the shifting of gears using the tach to see engine speed changes? I really don't feel like putting everything back together for a road test if I can help it until I have a reasonable expectation of success...I have enough cut hands, tranny fluid, gear oil, etc....all over me and my driveway....lol

thanks and have a great day!

Rich

When was this trans rebuilt? Was the rig driven at all before the recent t-case service? Behavior then as compared to now?

I can't definitively answer your question regarding perceived feedback without running gear components installed. My assumption is it would be very hard to detect shift points with no load placed on the engine/trans package even with the aid of a tach.

Just to rule out a simple item, have you checked the fluid level in the prescribed manner...ie level surface, engine at operating temperature idling in neutral following some brief gear cycling? Its entirely likely you have something more serious at play, but I've seen these units exhibit very erratic behavior brought on entirely by insufficient red juice.

Oh yes, let me clarify...

I decided to rebuild my tranny after it started to slip badly.

Once I pulled the t-case (d20) and tranny out, I decided, well, it's a 40 year old t-case, let me do that as well. While I had the tranny out, I flushed out tranny cooler, and installed new cooler lines.

So both were rebuilt by me at the same time. Took my time, and followed directions to the letter (as well as reading the 727 bible by carl munroe).

Installed both, and I'm now where I am at, with it not shifting into second.

I'm going to try to disconnect the kickdown lever first to see what happens.

For the sake of full disclosure, this is a trail rig with 40" tires.

Yes, fluid was filled as described...

Going to start working on it again here this afternoon....

Thanks,
Rich

Sure did....

Ok, pulled the pan, and found a big clump of "lint" which I think must have been from my shop rags on the filter.

I guess I didn't make sure everything was as clean as I thought it was....lint must have came from my shop towels.

So I'm guessing the valve body has crap in it. So it's out and I will start to tear down and clean it up. Besides that, pan looked great....

Just falling on my sword here so people don't make the same mistake I think I did.

Surprisingly all was very clean inside valve body except for a metal filing (from drilling the valve body) stuck in a valve.

Pulled everything out of valve body again, cleaned her all up (again) put it in, and runs great.....

Woohoo.....

Outstanding! Mayben preaches it to the point of being a broken record...the valve bodies must be surgically sterile before installation. This must be why.
