Trac-Lok

I've got a trac-lok in the rear of my 72 Scout 2. I needed a carrier last year and I picked it up for 20 bucks. I had a well known 4x4 shop go through it before I slapped it in. I know these things aren't very well liked but it was cheap. My question is, how can I prolong the life of this thing? Its my daily driver and I drive a lot in the snow and kinda long road trips. It makes some creepy noises when I get off the freeway and start turning but it seems to go away as quick as it comes. I want a power-lock but that's outta the question for now because they aren't cheap. I've got 11k on the rearend. Shouldn't it last longer? 31 inch tires, auto, 304 with a cam, head work, headers, TBI so it's not like I have too much power or tire to kill it.

Would you happen to know what vintage of trac-lok went in?

Up front I'm not a big fan either, but I've been told by a reputable gear man that the later versions, I believe '74 and later, were much stouter units and the only thing that kills them are bad drivers.

As far as the noise, do you have the required limit slip additive in the gear oil? I recommend Ford's xl3 which can be had at a dealership for a very reasonable cost. The ratio is around 1 to 1.5 oz/pint of oil in the housing.

You might want to look at the gears, see if there are obvious signs of wear or munching. The oil will have shiny looking metal in it from the clutch plates, it's chunks and shards you would worry about.

I'm pretty positive it's a newer one. The guy I got it from parts out a lot of newer Jeep 44's. As for the fluid that's the additive I used cause that's what the shop recommend. As for gears I bought a new ring and pinion set when I had this put in. It's just kind of an odd binding/popping sound. It doesn't get thrashed on or wheeled.

Sounds like the "clutches" are grabbing.

Add another "dose" of "posi-traction" fluid to the rear axle.

Whatever the correct amount is for your axle. You could try 1/2 the full "amount" and see if the noise goes away, but...

If you do not "stomp on the gas", it should last a long time based on your described use.

I think I'll change the fluid today and see what happens. I don't drive it hard and if in the rare case it spins one tire I'll get off the throttle quick.
