TQ blues

I just bought my third Scout II its a 79 345 527 auto with all the bells and whistles.
It was running great then started pouring black smoke out the pipes,
pulled it off stuck my spare edelbrock on and sent here off to be rebuilt. Got the carb back put it on primed and it ran like a dream uhtil the next morning went out to start it and no go whipped out starting fluid she took right off, all day no starting problems.
Next morning same crap again after dealing with this all week I put the edelbrock back on.
My tq prior to the first melt down was averaging between 16 & 18 mpg not a prayer of that with the edelbrock.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Make sure the choke is closing after cooling off. In the morning, remove the air cleaner lid and pump the throttle one time the choke should be shut tight. If not it needs to be adjusted...

Assuming it runs well other then that.

Choke is working asit should shejust doesn't seem to be getting that first squirt of fuel until its been primed with either gas or starting fluid after that it starts fine

I'm having a similar issue with the tq I just rebuilt. I also have to give it a shot of starting fluid to get a cold start and my choke is working. I wonder if your floats are set slightly to low and that makes cold starts difficult. Or maybe the rebuilder didn't check to see if the fuel wells are leaking and the fuel in the float bowls is leaking down over night. I had read that leaking fuel wells eventually get so bad the engine will start running way over Rich and makes it difficult to start.
Although as I have admitted in my "fuel dumping down primaries like a shower" thread, I really have no idea what I'm doing. Because of my over fueling issue, I adjusted my floats almost a 1/4 inch lower than spec to see if that would stop the over fuel condition. It did, but the engine still isn't running right.
Tonight I'm going to replace the brass floats with plastic floats and readjust back to factory spec. Fingers crossed this will fix my issue.

I love my tqs but they can be tempermental at times I have 4 oth ers around here that are off scouts so I guess I will just go through a different one myself and seem if I can get it right, I used to rebuild tqs and blue print holleys but got lazy a few years back time to dust off my books a dig out the nos rebuild kits. If it was me I'd stay with the brass floats and check them for leaks while apart I have bad luck with the composite ones.
