To Spray or not to Spray

Was thinking about using a 3m undercoating spray for the undercarriage of my Scout II. Basically want to seal the underside and prevent any rusting. I have not pulled the body off and done any sanding or prep. Should I not even think about it till I can do a thurough prep? What are the pros cons of the undercoating, recommend it?

To prevent any rusting, the (any) metal surface has to be 100% rust-free before the application of any material -- undercoating, rust-preventative paint or regular paint.

I believe products like por 15 can be applied over rust.

I'm afraid spray undercoating will create pockets where water and dirt will collect, ensuring rust.

I would clean as much of the old undercoating off as I could. Sand where you can and prep by applying por 15. Then finish it off with an epoxy paint (not the floor paint, but equipment paint). This should seal it up nicely and leave a smooth surface where dirt and water are less likley to get trapped. Epoxy paints also come in lots of colors so you can get a more custom look rather then just black.

I grew up on the east coast when undercoating was just starting to get popular, (ziebart coating). Personally I call it a miracle cure for cancer,(it don't exist).
Even on clean rigs, blisters do form and end up trapping fine road dirt which then aggravates and accelerates rust. On any Scout I've seen there are so many voids, traps, and small drains like for the cowling, that undercoating will ruin the vehicle in my opinion. Besides, the way scouts leak a lot of vehicle cancer starts on the inside.

Por 15 is a great product, but to use it right is a helluva lot of work.

I'm not a fan of undercoating rusty dirty cars. Only on a new body or on on that has been dipped and stripped would it be a good idea.

Basically one can never get all of the rust and the coating will never stop all moisture from penetrating. Like greg wrote the damaging water most of the time comes from the inside where rust hides.. I've seen to many perfect classics destroyed from under the coating. Just my opinion.
