timing question

I read michael mayben's post on installing a distributor. I do have a question that perhaps someone can answer for me. After having aligned the timing marks, and determined that the #8 cyl. In on compression, I am confused about installing the distributor. How can I tell which nipple on the dist. Cap is the #8cyl. In order to point the rotor at it before I stick the distributor into its hole? Holding the distr. In my hand, I can spin the shaft to poiont the rotor at any one of the eight nipples. Does it matter which one I select as #8? The spark plug wires are not yet installed because I am setting the motor up for the first start. It is probably simple to determine the #8 nipple on the cap, but I can't figure out how to do it. Thanks in advance. Pineneedle

The #8 selection doesn't happen while the dizz is out of the engine. What you want to do is orient the dizz so that the advance canister is basically centered in the travel range between the left cylinder head and the water pump. That gives you the maximum amount of rotation in either direction. With the dizz now stabbed and the rotor in place, its location will then determine for you which corresponding cap tower will be #8. Go clockwise from there according to the remainder of the firing sequence.

Here is a photo of the #8 position that IH utilizes.

#8 has a red circle around it.
