Its a beautiful morning in the low desert today and the 64 Scout is here with me. After 1400 miles in 3 days its over. As I said earlier I was hoping that it was as good as it seemed, but as everyone knows, they never are!

The body is awesome, no rust.................anywhere, at least none seen. It runs like crap, has butched wiring, and has alot of rocker noise, but it is really pretty. I will dive into it today to see if I can find the crappy running issue. Hopefully its just an ignition problem and not a flat cam lobe. I have a line on a free 152 and t90 in az and will be picking that up in a couple of weeks. I will them for rebuild units while, I hope, I get these running good.

Well its not ignition, its either a collapsed lifter, or a flat cam lobe. I dont have the time right now to take the engine apart to find out. After a close inpection of the rest of it, I believe that is does only have 63,728 miles on it. Either that or it was very well taken care of, which would be rare.

All in all I'm very pleased with my purchase.:cornut:

my wife seems to have fallen in love with it too! So I May have to find another one cause she might claim it when I get it running the way its sposed to.:incazzato:

Ok, spoke to soon, there is some rust repair that is needed in the floorboards, but thats it. No big deal.

I pulled the valve cover and while running I have all valves doing there thing and its oiling well. I have some lifters that are no pumping up all the way, but the more it runs the less noise they are making. So I think that some marvel in the oil will free them up, if not I'll have to replace them. I still have a bad miss and the wife is picking up tune up parts as I write this.

Will update later, going out to start the tune.
 
it's alive!!!

I didnt believe that the ignition was the problem.........but then again I didnt really have the tools that I needed at the campground or when I picked it up. We towed it to ihwr for the show and shine and limped it around the campground while there. We brought it home and she sat for a week.

New plugs
rotor
wires
couldnt find a cap
and the pooints were new

I re-adjusted the points by feeler guage, since my dwell meter looked like it got run over (dont remember that) so I need a new one. New plugs and wires and a little luck and she coughed, popped and fire up. Ran like crap for a few seconds then cleared up and was singin on all 4!!

I still got lifter noise but less everytime it runs. Timed her and diddled with the carb a bit and she runs pretty good.

Needless to say that I'm pretty happy.:icon_rotate:
 
Well as I figured my wife has claimed the little Scout. I've got it on the road to recovery and it runs ok for now. There is some rust repair that needs to be delt with and it needs wiring fixed, but I will "help" her out when I can.

I have made a deal for a 62 Scout p/u that will be coming home soon and will be my ride and I will do what I want with it! I will start a new thread for the "goat" and its mis-adventures with my wife.

This world continues to get smaller...when we figgrd out this was ray miller's red carpet I was floored!

This one of the pics ray sent me of the rig when we first hooked up, don't know if that is his house or not but this was taken right after he found the ride. We did alotta work on that rig by email, forum, and telephone!

Ray scanned this pic and sent it to me way back when.

Iirc, he bought this rig just after returning from nam in '66 or '67??? Ray is involved in cowboy action shootin' but this pic is from waaay before that stuff became popular!

How about the studebaker lark wagon in the background? I "think" it'sa '64 but I'm not up to speed on 'bakers.

I believe that thats ray's house, I know that thats his motorhome in the pic. I dont believe that the present Scout that I have was his origanal red carpet, I have the LST for this one and it mentions nothing about being a red carpet and also has nothing about the turbine hub caps, but does have the 16" wheel and tire upgrade. Either way I'm pretty happy with the Scout.

Did you get the 1904 checked out and shipped? I re-arranged the back yard yesterday so that I have more room to work on things. The sii is slowly getting stripped and the frame will be ready for the 62 Scout p/u that will be coming home soon. Not gunna do to much to it except fix any rust-out spots and rattle-can paint it so its at least 1 color. It's gunna be a heavy trail rig anyhow.

No, the rig you scored off ray is not his original ride post-nam! I forgit the story about why he finally got rid of the first one.

I've not completed testing the carb I'm shipping you, but will this afternoon. The continuous rain is keeping the hood down on the test mule, I can't bring it in the shop until I put a replacement axle back under the Travelall. The carb will ship Monday so you should see it Wednesday.

Not in such a big hurry...........although it would be nice to see how she runs with a carb that is up to the task. :icon_lol: and I understand about the weather! They are calling for snow here tonight and tomorrow...............have I said that I hate winter lately? I was sposed to be tearing apart the sii today, but its 42* and blowin like a mother, so that aint happenin, and to top it off, I know its gunna snow. My wacko wife just washed her car today. :yikes: taunting the weather gods to get it dirty again!
 
Got a short break in the rain finally yesterday so I could test the carb I have for ya.

Here's shot of it actually running with the notations on the fuel bowl.

I jetted it #60 (#62 is oem) to use at your elevation, so try it that way first. There is a #62 jet included in the bag also with the intake gasket.

In the pic it's running at a regulated fuel pressure of 5psi.

Will be waiting for it michael! Glad to be getting a carb thats right from the start. Would like to know what the issues were with the one I presently have, since I'm a 1 barrel rookie!
 
Sealed the deal on a new/rebuilt 152 this week! Have a "spare" trans and t-case with an od on it that I picked up from a local j/y in the back room/garage. (we havent built the new garage yet so the patio/den has become the garage, and indoor working area.) will be ordering a master kit for the trans and t-case and will go thru the od so that the main drivetrain is "fresh". With the carb that michael has built for me, we will run the present stuff till the other stuff is ready to be installed, should be in a month or so.................come on summer!! :ihih:

Yep, the shop didn't get the packing slip sent up until Tuesday, our email system being erratic is wreaking havoc with our process! It went in the mail Wednesday, you should have seen it today or tomorrow (Saturday) at the latest, sometimes this priority flat rate shipping ends up being next day.
