Unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate, so when you remove the transmission its all one unit, and you will avoid breaking the ears off of the oil pump inside the transmission.
Raise the truck off the ground and put jack stands under the front axle, use a tranny jack that has a small chain that wraps over the top of the tranny to keep it from falling off, or if it don't have that, use a ratchet strap to keep it in place. You pretty much said the other stuff in your post. Good luck.
