TBI fuel pressure regulator

So I am looking to install a newer style gas tank in my truck to supply the TBI conversion. I found a very clean tank with stock sender/pump cheap from a local yard. Its from a 98 or 99 suburban. From my research it looks like that stock pump puts out around 50psi.

So my question, would the stock TBI fuel pressure regulator do fine to reduce this 50'ish psi to what the TBI likes to see?

Anyone know if the pumps are swapable from the 98/99 style to the TBI style pump and being able to keep the stock sender unit?

I understand having an in-tank pump has its disadvantages when the time comes to replace but I've gone the external route before and did not care for it.

The external pumps I recommend are capable of 90psi so the TBI regulator will do fine with the 50psi pump.
But unless you went cheap and noisy I don't understand the problems with the external.

I normally run the masters/airtex and have never had a failure and you don't hear them when installed per the FAQ's.

I have heard some of the pumps others have used and you could hear the pump before you heard the exhaust as the vehicle approached.

Return l;ine restrictions can also contribute to a noisy pump.

The factory TBI intank pump only puts out about 15psi iirc.
 
Thanks for the reply bill. I used one of the recomended external pumps but never liked the way it was mounted up. Just personal preference, it worked fine though. I actually made a nice little skidplate/mount/enclosure for it on my old Scout.

I ended up getting the tank/sender/pump for free so I'm not out anything and needed a tank to put in the truck anyway.

I just about have everything to start the conversion when spring gets here. Just need an adapter plate for the TBI to the intake.

Been awhile but I'm still sloooowly plugging away on gathering parts so I can get it all done at once. I was reading on the fuel pressure stuff and it got me thinking. A fuel pressure guage in line with the supply will tell me what pressure the pump is putting out.

How exactly do you tell what pressure the internal regulator is restricting it too though? Is this something you have to have a computer hooked up to read or is there another location to screw a guage into on the TBI?

The regulator is on the outlet side of the injectors...so if you put a gauge anywhere inline between the pump and the throttle body, where the regulator is, it will read the same constant pressure set by the regulator.
That's how it works.
