I have a 727 with a 2 wheel drive tailhouse and one with a 4 wheel drive tailhouse can I switch them one is in the Scout and slips and needs a rebuild and the other is fine. The one in the Scout is 4 wheel drive and the spare has the 2 wheel tailhouse.
Thank you for your help in advance!

A 2x4 tf 727/t-407 for a pickall and a 2x4 Scout II will interchange (complete transmission) with a change in the actual shift lever which controls the valve body.

In order to convert a 2x4 pickall or Scout II tranny to accept a married d20 transfer case for a 4x4 Scout II, the output shaft, the tail housing assembly, and the input gear from a Scout II 4x4 donor must be installed in the 2x4 transmission.

The supported segment of the output shaft, including the bearing and seal arrangement is completely different between a 2x4 pickall trans and a Scout II 4x4 trans.

Hello,
I am about to do this same thing, pulling a trany out of 2wd Travelall, putting it in Scout II 4x4. What manual/book do you recomend for instructions on doing this changover in the shaft and tailhousing? (zero experience messing inside auto transmission)
thanks,
steve

ps what should I order from you guys to do this changover right? Gaskets? Bearings?
Thanks

The book by carl munroe (torqueflite a-727 transmission handbook) we refer to constantly in this sub-forum is mandatory for anyone doing tf 727 work, along with the IH service manual which I surprisingly complete for transmission work.

We handle the B&M "transmission inna box" that is by far the best value in a 727 complete service parts kit including all frictions and the shift improvement kit for the valve body. I now use only those parts in the units I rebuild. The part number is not shown in the online store right now, you must call the shop to order, 530-268-0864. The instructions in the B&M kit are fairly decent, but are not sufficient to use for a rebuild by someone who has never been inside a 727 before and does not understand the tools required.

In order to convert a 2x4 727 from either a Scout II, a pickall, or an IH motorhome to a Scout II 4x4 output shaft configuration for use with a married transfer case, you must have a donor Scout II transmission and transfer case adapter (tail housing).

The output shaft is the last component to come out of a tranny during teardown, and the second major component to go into the case (as part of the planetary assemblies) during reassembly.

The output shaft bearing in the Scout II transfer case adapter is a "special" and is not available new over-the-counter. We have those bearings manufactured for us exclusively and also have the two seals that must be used in conjunction with the bearing and output shaft combo used in Scout II 4x4 apps.

Sir,
thanks for the response, I have the torque flight book and service manuals, I will be picking up the "donor" truck on Thursday, (Travelall 2wd) po said it was rebuilt by "chrysler" mechanic 5k miles ago, not sure if I should trust or not, its been sitting for 5 plus years however. Once I get it and check it out I will be calling to order the items. I gues one question I have is if this is something I should attempt as I have no experience inside auto transmission?
Thanks for the info,
steve

Anyone who wants to learn slushbox tranny work has to start somewhere! And plan to scruu up stuff in the process! I've been doing the 727 since '68 and still scruu up stuff.

The biggest issue is "tools" and how to do workarounds for that.

To remove the front pump, ya need a slide hammer setup with the proper adapter to thread into the pump cover. Preferably two slide hammers or a pair of home-brew slappers made from allthread.

Ya need a method to compress the clutch paks for rebuilding. Ya need a method for compressing the servos for rebuilding. Ya need a method for cleaning parts that involves the use of a hd petroleum-base solvent, (not the water-base shit). The list goes on...the munroe book has the details.

I'd highly recommend that you actually do a build of your existing sii 727 that is already proper for a Scout II 4x4 transfer case mate. No need to gut out the wrong transmission and end up mixing parts that May not be compatible. See this thread:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.co...t-407-tf727-variations-parts-differences.html

And...how many times have we seen the "just been overhauled" statement end up actually meaning "a po project that failed"??

If you are going to learn this stuff, then start out on a unit that is a known runner but just tired! Not some other problem child with unknown issues. I deal with this "mixed parts" deal constantly now, folks have really scruud up these trannys over the years using junkyard shit that is wrong and then end up pawning the pile off on someone else!

But then,...we see the same thing around here all the time regarding engines also!
