T-39 identification and service?

Going to do some work on my tranny and want to make sure what I am working on is what it is. I looked up what came standard on a 71 Scout II, which is a borg warner t-39 auto. I tried to find a tag but no luck so far. How do I identify the tranny if I can't find the tag?

Also I am going to drop the pan and change the atf for the first time. Are there any heads up for a first timer (gaskets, filters...). Anything to look for damage wise or additional things I should do while I have the pan off? Thanks a ton

Confused again here...if the transmission is a t-39, then it's a standard shift. Atf service is done only on an automatic transmission.

Are we talking two separate units here?

A manual transmission in an ihc-produced vehicle "should" have a metallic tag mounted under some bolt head that will have the part number stamped in place.

The numbers which are cast into the actual transmission housing components are a part number only for that part and would be the manufacturer's number, not an ihc number.

I May be confused but I am basing the t-39 being an auto off information I found on the net about what came standard in the 71, here it is copied and pasted from the site:

1971. First production 4/19/71. Grille shell painted body color (pre-production units were dark gray) and had 3 horizontal slots. 4-196, 6-232, 6-258, v-304, and v-345 engines, t13/14 3speed, t44/45 4speed, t-39 warner gear automatic transmissions. Fa-13 Dana model 30, fa-44 Dana model 44 front axles, ra-18 standard and ra-28 trac-loc Dana model 44 rear axles. 3.31, 3.73, and 4.27 ratios available. Spring ratings 2200# and 2400# front, 2000#, 2000#hd, and 2500# progressive rear. Black vinyl upholstery and dash standard, blue, sage, black, and red nylon optional.

The sii is an auto so if it is not a t-39 what tranny could it be. Is the metalic tag on a bolt head on the oil pan or somewhere else?

Just found and uncovered the original lineset ticket and found the code which is 13049. I did a search and have not found any matches yet but the t-39 13039 so that is obviously not a match.

You are correct and I am wrong! That transmission is a borg warner 11, used only in the first 18 months or so of the Scout 810/Scout II production. I have a full bw 11 setup here in the shop on the floor!

For the correct service process, use the procedure found in the first version of the Scout II service manual, the one marked cts 2304.

A model number t-39 would have a code number of 13039. A model number t-49 would have a code number of 13049. The units are virtually identical and vary by the vehicle series and production date when they were installed originally.

I "think" that the t-39 was used in the Scout 800 and the t-49 was used in the Scout 810/Scout II.

No problem I am just glad we figured out what transmission I have so I can get movin on changing the fluids out. What is the low down on the t-49? Is a good tranny and how does it stack up to a 727 and other IH trannies?

The borg warner 11 (and it's relatives) are decent units. Very heavy though as all components are inside cast iron. The transmission can actually be removed from it's bellhousing.

I've never ripped into one of 'em myself. Parts are available to some degree since it was the basic unit used to build the Ford variation also.

There are a few threads here in this sub-forum regarding work that other members have done.
