Swepco compatibility with other oil

I have a question about the compatibility of other oil brands with swepco.

I just put swepco in the 392 in my t/a (May have noticed my previous post).

I sometimes take extended trips and I wonder what "name" brand(s) of oil you could add to swepco (306) if I "ran out" of the supply I carry? (do purple and yellow "mix"? )

or, you should do a complete oil change?

If you do a complete oil change, again, which is a "better" brand? Or, does it matter?

Thanks, Robert

Robert,

as far as compatibility is concerned, I would say if you had to add oil in a situation where you are out, for heavens sake, add an oil which is not Rated sm or cj-4! In other words, you would need to find a pre-2007 engine oil. In all reality, the 306 would be compatible with another dinosaur oil, even if it is rated sm or cj-4, but you would be severely reducing the additive levels, especially phosphorous, zinc and calcium. So, if there is a major brand name available, such as shell rotella-t, or chevron delo 400 in the weight you need, and is rated previous to sm/cj-4, that would be my first choice.....if sm/cj-4 is the only thing available, you could add to the 306, but keep in mind you will have a "watered-down" version of the additive package......in fact, those oils which are rated up to sl/ci-4 (which is the previous api rating) will also have a lower additive package than the 306 does, but not nearly as much lower as the sm/cj-4.

I would under no circumstances add a "synthetic or synthetic blend" oil with swepco 306. There are many different formulations of those oils on the market, some are better than others, but most of them have little or no zinc in them. Some of them might not be compatible at all, and the safest way to go would be safe instead of sorry for compatibility.

Hope that helps!
