Suspension Parts Question

I am researching what I need to buy to have a good suspension on my 1977 Scout II. From what I have found, I think I need a reverse shackle kit and a Rough Country lift kit. I have 31 inch tires on now that rub. Would 2.5 inch lift work with these tires and 33's later? Do I need break line extensions? Do I need body bushings and or a body lift? Will I need a steering extension or any other extensions? I drive the Scout 2 or 3 times a week and off road on the mountain roads here in Colorado. Is there any instructions on installing these kits? I know welding is needed for the reverse shackle kit, that should not be a problem. Thank for your help.

To fit 31" tires without rubbing and get a good ride quality(for a Scout) I recommend our CPT reverse shackle kit($290, add $395 for optional long travel driveshaft), 5" CPT rear shackles($53.95), Rough Country 2.5" lift kit($565), CPT stainless steel extended brake line kit($154.95) and 4* caster shims($41.50 with new centerpins). When you decide to switch up to 33" tires I suggest at least a 1" body lift($134.95) and a borgeson steering kit($174.95). When installing the body lift kit that would be a great time to install new body bushings which cost $78.95 for the set.

As for directions the CPT reverse shackle kit does come with them and the Rough Country suspension system will come with a very basic install sheet. The rest can either be found in your service manual or simply ask us for some install advice when making your purchase.

Thanks Jeff.
Can you tell me about the "optional long travel driveshaft"? Is this a must? What does that do? Also the 4* caster shims?

Are you saying I can get away without 1" body lift and borgeson steering kit, it I stick with thee 31's for now.

I know these May be dumb questions. But just don't know. It is awsome to talk with someone who works on scouts! I can't wait to get the Scout riding smooth and crawling up these mountians. Thanks again.

The stock front driveshaft will barely be within its operating range after performing both the reverse shackle and lift leafsprings so this is why we recommend a longer travel, heavier duty driveshaft. Some customers don't expect to offroad their Scout much and hence decline to upgrade the driveshaft as they are mostly after a certain look, not function. If you plan on taking the Scout offroad and actually want to use it to its fullest ability then the driveshaft upgrade is a must.

Caster shims are installed to give the Scout better road manners. Installing caster shims worsens the driveshaft angle. Honestly I would go into more detail but the subject has been covered many times here on our forums. Use our search feature to locate discussions about caster shims.

And yes 31" tires should fit with the upgrades I posted earlier minus the body lift.

Thanks Jeff,

sounds like I need the long travel drive shaft. I will check out caster shims on the search. Is there a way to calculate the shipping cost before I place the order?
