Steering, what did I do wrong?

The Power steering input shaft on my 74 Scout was leaking, so today I installed a seal kit. When I went to pull the piece with the seal, the whole worm shaft came out. Put it all back together and now it won't turn all the way to the right. Any idea how to fix it?

Ya you've changed the alignment / timing internally the whole thign has to come apart and be built on the bench.

Thanks, kind of figured something like that. I did find that the seal surface on the input shaft is kind of galled up and there was an occasional 'stiff' spot in the steering, so I found a used box today that's supposed to be in good shape.

There is supposed to be a stiffer spot in the center of the steering, thats your "over center" however it's only supposed to be 6-10 in lbs higher than the outer turns in both directions on the input shaft.

Good on the used box! I'm taking my old one to a local rebuilder, hope it's salvagable after my accident last year, just all sorts of slop every where. My spare 78 box went into service.

You unthreaded the orbital valve, which is completely unnecessary to remove to do a input seal. Now your 22 ball bearings inside the box are everywhere inside until you tear the whole thing down and restack them in small-large order.

I kind of figured I had problems when the orbital valve came out. Would have been nice to have instructions on how to do the input seal in your kit instead of what I got which were for rebuilding the whole box.

I did my first input seal when I was, maybe 15, and I just screwed in two screws into the seal and popped it out with a prybar. Then used a socket as a seal driver.
