Steering pump and box bleed

79 sII. installed a new box and Saginaw pump. Redhead, the box manufacturer says run through the throw of the box. Looking for any insight on bleeding the system before I fire up.

Just fill the pump right to the top and slowly cycle the box to the left, refill, to the right, and refill to normal level. Cycle it a few times. Do it with the wheels off the ground. It's easier.

I'm back with another question, got the box and pump installed, pump filled with fluid. Jacked up the front end, started the engine and ran the box back and forth through the stroke a number of times. It ran smooth, no funky noise. Took it for a spin around the block, now have a little whining and the fluid is foaming in the pump. Any thoughts?

Foaming sounds like you may still have some air in the system. But I'm not an expert. Someone will confirm or provide more info. Keep at it, you'll figure it out!!

With the front end jacked up, did you cycle the wheel before starting the engine? If not, you may have gotten air in the system. Let it sit overnight, double check fluid, and then restart and see if the noise is still there.

thanks jeff. i did do that, then of i disconnected the hoses because i had to pull the pump and of course, failed to do this again. likely reintroduced air. i'll do as you suggest.
