steering is loose??

I just bought a 1980 Scout diesel. It is a dog and the lifted 6 inches. The engine is a different story, but the steering is super loose. Btw- I know nothing about vehicles. I don't even know what kind of steering it is. Not power I assume? Can anything be done to make it drive better? Will lowering it a couple of inches make a big difference? Thanks for your time and response.

Most likely worn out parts and steering box is moving around on the frame. Post up some clear pictures from different angles so we know what we're working with.

Lowering will help bump steer. This is caused by the angle of the drag link between the steering box and right knuckle.
