No ill effect. Absolutely there is a noticeable difference. When I installed the new pump it had about .050 of shims/washers installed. I was barley able to turn the steering wheel lock to lock. It was so tight that the engine wanted to stall.
I removed the valve and then removed the washers. I then reinstalled the valve and filled the pump with fluid and was now able to turn lock to lock with little effort and no strain on the engine.
